About this disease

What it is about

The more pronounced the uterine prolapse, the further the uterus "slides" towards the vaginal outlet. In severe cases, the uterus can slip all the way in front of the vaginal entrance. This is called total prolapse. The uterine prolapse is divided into different degrees. Internationally, the "Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System" is used for this purpose.

Symptoms and consequences

Classic complaints of uterine prolapse are a disturbing foreign body sensation in the vaginal area, whereby one can often feel a "foreign body" oneself; a downward feeling of pressure; the feeling that "something is falling out of the vagina"; pain in the sacral region; pain during sexual intercourse; urinary incontinence. If the descent is pronounced, there may also be problems with bladder and bowel emptying.

What we do for you

Examination and diagnosis

In our urogynecological consultation, any kind of prolapse complaints are clarified and treated. The doctor determines the degree of uterine prolapse on the basis of a gynecological examination. Usually, an additional ultrasound examination is performed from the vagina. The findings are then discussed with the patient and, depending on the symptoms, a course of action is determined.

Treatment

In principle, uterine prolapse is treated only when there are complaints. The treatment consists in performing a descent surgery. In such an operation, the uterus can be preserved or removed. Various surgical techniques are available: It can be operated through the vagina, but there is also the possibility of a laparoscopy using the so-called keyhole technique or an abdominal incision.
