About this disease

What it concerns

In coccygeal fistula, ingrown hairs in the coccyx area cause inflammatory changes that can lead to abscesses and fistula ducts. The disease occurs more frequently in men between 20 and 30 years of age. It is favored by strong hairiness, a strong secretion of sweat, a predominantly sedentary posture, obesity and smoking.

Symptoms and consequences

In most cases, coccygeal fistulas are not known and do not cause any symptoms. However, inspection of the buttock region may already reveal skin openings that have not undergone inflammatory changes. In the acute abscessed form, there is swelling, redness and painfulness of the affected region.

What we do for you

Examination and diagnosis

A specific questioning and examination can lead to a reliable diagnosis. When pressure is applied to the surrounding area, inflammatory secretions can often be drained from the openings of the coccygeal fistula during the examination. Occasionally, an MRI examination may be necessary to determine the extent in depth.

Treatment

The therapy is always surgical. If an abscess is present, it is opened. If there is a fistula system without abscess, it is surgically removed and, depending on the findings, the skin is left open or closed.
