About this disease
What it is about
Endometriosis can be found in the entire abdominal cavity and in extremely rare cases even in the lungs. The lesions are partly superficial and partly deep. In the foreground are cyclical lower abdominal pains in connection with menstrual bleeding, but pain during sexual intercourse, urination and defecation are also possible. This depends on the exact location of the endometriosis foci.
Types
In addition to endometriosis of the abdominal cavity, there is endometriosis of the uterus and endometriosis cysts on the ovaries. Ingrowth into the vagina is also possible. Only very rarely are endometriosis foci found outside the abdominal region.
Symptoms and consequences
Symptoms include pulling lower abdominal pain during menstruation, pain during intercourse, pain during urination, and pain during bowel movements.
What we do for you
Examination and diagnosis
Diagnosis of endometriosis is often difficult because they are small foci that are rarely visible on ultrasound. Sometimes such nodules can be palpated vaginally or visible on MRI. In the case of endometriosis cysts, ultrasound often provides a good diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis of endometriosis in the abdomen is made by laparoscopy. This allows the extent and localization to be determined. Therapy is performed during the endoscopy or in a second step.
Treatment
The treatment of endometriosis depends on several factors such as the extent of the disease, symptoms and the desire to have children. Basically, there is the possibility of drug therapy or surgical treatment with remediation of all findings. Drug therapy prior to surgical treatment may also be useful. In any case, prophylactic medication should be administered after the operation.
